Three-part session to boost confidence and aid players’ decision-making in 1v1s and 2v2s.
This warm-up helps create decision-makers, increasing confidence of when to dribble and when to pass to break a line.
It also helps improve technical ability to escape pressure and tactical decision-making of how to break the line by reading cues of the defender.
Mark out an area relative to the age and ability of your players. One defender starts in each end, facing two attackers.
Play starts with the first attacker playing to teammate at the other end of the grid.
As the player receives the ball, they have to decide to whether to pass to their adjacent teammate to beat the defender, play a wall pass, or break the line with their first touch.
The objective is to play to one of the free players at the other end, and the process repeats.
Defenders stay on for 60 seconds. How many breaks can you get in 60 seconds?
- Read the body language of defender to help you decide which space to attack.
- Angle of teammate to help move the defender to make decision easier.
- Quality of pass (location, weight) or first touch (into space to break the line).
1. Set up an area with one defender in each half and four attackers at each end
2. Attackers start by passing the ball to the opposite end. The first two attackers then play 2v1 against the defender
3. Once passing the halfway line, they then pass to the opposite end’s attackers, who then play 2v1 against their defender
