A session working on key transitional moments and relationships between players. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
This training game exercise allows players to play in a directional 4v4 small-sided game while using the numerical advantage of four external neutral players, producing an 8v4 in possession.
Use a rectangular grid, roughly 35x40 yards, depending on the age, ability and number of players. You will need three teams of four.
Teams inside the grid look to be the first to score by using their teammates and external neutrals. Once a team scores, that team goes back and gets a new ball, while the team who conceded goes off and become neutral players. The neutral team comes on to defend.
Use three-minute rounds or a different point system - if a goal is scored off one touch, award two points, and if a neutral between goals assists a goal, award three points.
Limit the number of coaching points during this phase of the training session. Obviously, if something needs to be addressed then do so but this is the phase of the session where the players should be able to play with limited stoppages.
The goal is for the players to execute the principles you have been emphasizing leading up to the training game. Encourage both teams to cooperate and compete.
1. Divide players into three equal teams. One team starts as neutrals around the outside (Yellows)
2. Teams aim to score in the mini goals. Award more points if a neutral provides an assist
3. When a team concedes, they switch places with the neutral team, with the team that scored retaining possession
