A session on finding space in the middle and switching the flow of play quickly. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
This session works on finding space in the middle and switching the flow of play quickly. How fast can the players check into space, find open space for another player to run into, and combine with one another?
Mark out an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Divide players into two teams and place a gate or goal in each corner. Half of each team starts behind the two gates or goals their team is defending.
Players play 2v2 to small gates or goals in each corner. Once a goal is scored, the scoring pair stays on and two new players replace the conceding pair.
The new pair enters the pitch with a ball so are immediately attacking. If the ball goes off, whichever team kicked the ball out of bounds is now off and a new pair comes on with the ball.
Both sides of the line can have balls ready so it is important for them to communicate to see who will start with the ball, and this is good for the defensive team to be ready for the ball to come from either direction.
This drill is fun, quick-moving, communication-based and transition-oriented.
You can change the size of the area to make the practice more or less intense.
Other variations include adding more players, such as 3v3, which will allow more switches of play and combinations, or 3v2, which will change the decision-making process for both defence and attack.
This 2v2 game incorporates quick transitioning and finding space. Crisp, clean and quick touches are important. Ensure players are receiving on their back foot, driving into space and moving off the ball.
1. Divide players into two teams of equal size - they start behind each of two goals they are defending
2. Play 2v2 in the middle, with players aiming to dribble through one of their opponents’ two goals to score
3. If a pair scores, they remain on the pitch. Two new opponents come on with a ball, replacing those who conceded
