This three-part session develops players’ ability to react quickly when winning possession, countering and switching the point of attack. By KIM DeCESARE
This warm-up focuses on receiving the ball with an open body shape. The pattern will change once the players understand it.
Place cones in a rectangle, of 15 x 20 yards, and two cones evenly spaced in the middle, to form an hourglass shape. Start with one player at each cone, except the starting cone which requires two players to enable the pattern to flow.
The first player on the starting cones begins by passing to the player to their right. Players at the centre cone will go to their right but should show to open up on their left.
Players should look to receive the ball with the instep of their back foot and an open body shape. Focus should also be on verbal communication, body language, and deliberately checking the shoulder (scanning) to look at the player who is receiving the ball next.
Coaches can change the direction of the pattern, or change the pattern completely.
