Develop your team’s speed of play and creativity in the final third with this small-sided game.
This three-part session develops awareness and speed of attacking in the final third, working on movement off the ball, moving the ball quickly, attacking as a five and quality of end product.
Use the full width and just over half a pitch, with a full-size goal at each end. Depending on numbers, teams play 7v7, 8v8 or 9v9.
Play a small-sided game with normal rules but with a focus on the key points from the previous practice. Coaches can reward teams with additional goals if they score having combined with two or three players in the final third, for example..
Players should work on timing and angle of movement to receive, as well as weight of pass. Players should look to make quick combinations in the final third, with a focus on end product.
If you have odd numbers, one player can act as a ‘magic’ player, playing for whichever team is in possession to give them an attacking overload.
1. Set up using just over half a pitch, with two teams of 9.
