This small-sided game offers a game-realistic environment to work on progressive passes, with the ability to finish on goal.
Set out a pitch size that is suitable for the number, age and ability of your players.
Split players into two teams with a goalkeeper each. Players should look to move and combine to create opportunities to get a shot on goal.
To encourage forward passing, any backwards pass must be immediately followed by a forward pass.
Adaptations: If the game becomes too hectic, remove the restrictions of playing backwards and allow players to build possession patiently. You could also divide the pitch into thirds and allow teams to score a bonus goal if they score following a build-up in which a successful pass was played across one of the thirds.
Encourage players to combine and get to goal quickly by playing the earliest forward pass option. Players should continue to focus on movement that allows a forward pass to be played, as well as creating space for others.
