Three-part session teaching players to receive the ball when they are being closed down
This three-part session works on players’ ability to receive the ball under pressure and, where possible, play a forward pass.
The session gives players the opportunity to work on scanning, receiving, passing, movement and shielding the ball.
Mark out an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Place one target player at each end and play 2v2 in the middle of the area.
One target player begins the practice by passing into one of the central players. The aim for the central players is to transfer the ball from one target player to the other, using their team-mate if required. If the other pair wins possession, the game continues with them attempting to transfer the ball between target players.
Add a scoring system, so the first team to successfully complete five passes wins.
Do players understand where to move so they are in the best position to receive the ball? Are players scanning to recognise space and pressure?
1. Set up with a target player at each end of the playing area
2. Teams play 2v2 in the middle of the area
3. Pairs aim to transfer the ball from one target player to the other, retaining possession if they do so
