A session to develop the decision-making and techniques around progressive passing. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
This small-sided game takes ideas and techniques into a game-realistic format. It works on when to play forward to break lines and when to be patient in possession, or when to drive forward into space.
Mark out an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Divide area into thirds, with the middle third slightly shorter than the two end areas. Split players into two teams, including goalkeepers.
The ball always starts with a goalkeeper and if a team scores, they keep possession. Play begins with players locked into their zones. A player can advance forward only when the ball is transferred to the next third, and can advance even if they were not the player to progress the ball. Once a team has lost possession, players must retreat to their original thirds.
Remove the thirds and allow players to move freely in the area, to see if players recognise when to play a forward pass or dribble forward without being restricted into zones, and when to be patient in possession.
Timing and weight of pass to allow recipient to receive the ball in space, on the back foot and to play off one or two touches. Timing of movement to escape defender and receive the ball in space. Deciding when to remain patient and maintain possession, and when to be brave and try to break a line with a pass, or by running with the ball.
