A session on organisation and communication when out of possession. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
This session works on players’ organisation and communication when out-of-possession, helping delay the opponent’s attack, deny time and space, dictate the play and ultimately, defend the goal.
Set up a playing area relative to the age and ability of your players, with a goal at each end. Split players into teams to play 10 v 4/5/6 outfielders, plus two goalkeepers.
Play starts with the goalkeeper on the team of 11, as they look to build out to the opponent’s goal. Their aims are to find gaps to play through and switch the point of attack quickly.
The out-of-possession team scores simply by touching the ball, but scoring a goal is worth three to them.
Progress the game to only allow the out-of-possession team to score if they win the ball, rather than just touching it. Also consider adding or subtracting players to decrease or increase the difficulty for the out-of-possession team.
Encourage the out-of-possession team to consider where they want to force the attackers, and how their organisation, body shape and communication will allow this.
They should remain compact and prioritise protecting the middle of the pitch, with good cover and balance, and be patient to wait for a mistake before looking to win possession.
