A session to develop the problem-solving skills needed to break down defences. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
This session develops players’ understanding of problem-solving on the pitch around breaking down a low block. It also develops understanding of how individual roles on the pitch change when playing against a low block.
Mark out an area relative to the age and ability of your players, with a small gate (5-7 yards wide) at one end and an end zone at the other.
Divide players into small groups. You can set up two simultaneous pitches if required.
Attackers try to stop ball in the gate. Defenders set up in a low block. If they win the ball, their aim is to play into the end zone. They have to run into the end zone and receive - they cannot be waiting there.
• Encourage attackers to be patient.
• Stretch defenders by creating width, depth and height.
• Quick switches of play.
• Encourage defenders to play wide as soon as they win the ball back.

2. The team defending the gate (Blues) set up in a low-block and can score by passing for a player to receive in the end zone
3. The attacking team (Reds) aim to break down the low block and score by stopping the ball in the gate
