Establishing a safe and inclusive environment is essential to ensure high levels of engagement and enjoyment.

01 Cultivate a Cohesive and Caring Team

Aim: Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere by emphasising the value of teamwork and mutual support over individual abilities.

How?:

1. Set clear expectations on behavior and language and promote an atmosphere where team members feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment. The use of a ’Player Commitment Agreement’ could support this process.
2. Encourage team members to compliment and appreciate each other’s efforts, both on and off the field.
3. Promote inclusivity by respecting individuals’ autonomy in self-identification, particularly with preferred pronouns.
4. Incorporate a time to reflect collectively at the end of each session through a Player of the Week. This process allows each team member to celebrate a team-mate for not just skill, but other qualities such as sportsmanship, teamwork, compassion; components that are fundamental to building a safe and inclusive team environment.

02 Build Resilience Through Support

Aim: Shift perspective from a setback to an opportunity for growth and improvement.

How?:

1. Integrate regular feedback sessions where mistakes are discussed openly and constructively.
2. Peer-to-peer mentoring opportunities: pairing experienced players with newer members, creating a support system for learning from challenges.
3. As the coach, share personal experience of failure, success and development to offer a sense of humility and relatability to those experiencing challenges on the pitch.

03 Diversify Roles and Responsibilities

Aim: Increase engagement in sessions by providing players with alternative roles, to uncover other qualities they can bring.

How?:

1. Incorporate activities into sessions that encourage the team to think beyond traditional coaching methods. Give players the chance to have autonomy over sessions through delivery and leadership roles.
2. Provide players with an opportunity to express preferences for certain positions and consider these during team assignments.
3. Organise skill-building sessions and consider adapting sessions to accommodate all abilities in the team.
4. Rotate players through various positions during practices and friendly matches to develop versatility and increase confidence when stepping out of their comfort zones.

04 Nurture a Supportive Environment

Aim: Establish open communication and collectively celebrate achievements.

How?:

1. Schedule regular team reflection sessions to discuss successes and challenges.
2. Create a positive and constructive feedback system where players can express their thoughts and feelings.
3. Accept conflict as healthy but support players to navigate resolutions. This applies to player-player and coach-player relationships.
4. Celebrate milestones, both personal and team, fostering accomplishment and unity.

05 Promote Inclusivity and Comfortability

Aim: Address potential barriers to entry, such as access to or the discomfort associated with traditional sports attire, so that all members of the team feel safe to participate.

How?:

1. Provide a range of kit options, including more comfortable and inclusive alternatives for those who may feel restricted by traditional uniforms.
2. Establish a culture that prioritises comfort and personal choice in attire, ensuring that players feel confident and supported in their clothing choices.
