In common with many countries, South Africa retains a significant gender imbalance when it comes to soccer coaches.
Female coaches do exist, not least the likes of national-team coach Desiree Ellis, but the numbers remain small, with opportunities for others few and far between.
One person trying to address this imbalance is Carmen Rene – the first and only female coach active in the Cape Town Premier Futsal League.
In 2021, she took the bull by the horns and launched a free, accredited platform for female futsal coaches in Cape Town, enabling them to gain their coaching license and make them more employable.

WSC: How did this all come about? What's the idea behind it?
CR: "It started with me being the first and only female [coach] active in the provincial futsal league.
"On my D and C coaching licence courses, I was the only female among 20 to 50 male coaches and it was quite costly to attend.
"I then did some research and discovered why most females aren't accredited yet. It is because they don’t have the necessary funds to attend these courses.
"That's when I decided to work on a plan to see how I could help women in football.
"The idea is to create a pathway to make these women more employable and grow women’s futsal and football as a whole."
WSC: Who is it aimed at and how have you gone about reaching these people?
CR: "The aim of this course is to provide candidates with an understanding of the techniques and skills related to futsal.
"This course will help candidates organise and deliver basic futsal practices and will provide an introduction to the structure and laws of the game and the role futsal can play in developing underlying techniques.
"The course is aimed at unemployed female soccer players who have a keen interest in becoming coaches, as well as female coaches who are not yet accredited.
"I've used mainstream and social media to reach out to people."
Carmen Rene is hoping to create a whole new generation of female futsal coaches
WSC: What can coaches taking part in the programme expect?
CR: "The course content includes developing an appreciation of the application of the basic techniques of futsal within game play, as well as demonstrating an understanding of the underlying core strands of defending, attacking and transitional play in futsal through a games-based approach.
"The idea is to create a pathway to make these women more employable..."
"Coaches will also demonstrate an understanding of the futsal laws and develop an understanding of futsal as a standalone game in its own right and the significant variances from conventional five-a-side.
"They will also show an awareness of the part futsal can play in the development of young players and understand the different interactions possible when coaching those players."
WSC: How many coaches have been involved so far and what has the feedback been like?
CR: "So far, 40 female coaches have taken part in the course and they have loved it!
"Messages are streaming in to find out when the next courses are taking place - so I guess we did a good job."
WSC: What qualifications have they achieved and what have they gone on to do?
CR: "All 40 coaches have achieved a Level 1 certification and 10 of them have been employed in the game, including by after-school programs through the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports, which is great."
WSC: What is the future for the programme?
CR: "My plans are to add first-aid certification to the course syllabus and then to complete the Level 2 and 3 coaching licences with those who have started with Level 1. I’d also love to get more coaches employed.
"Although these courses are given for free, it is quite costly to host. I'm hoping to get sponsors on board who see value in this programme, and women in sport more widely."
